Leaving Seattle to Discover Anchorage

We left the Seattle airport around noon. After checking in we went to the gate where I taught Riley a few new jokes and then let him start watching the original Star Wars movies on my portable media player, his first time to see the classic films. While waiting Kim iced her foot, having taken a tumble down the stairs the day before, fortunately it was a minor sprain and she would be fully recovered in a day or so.

A short two and half hour uneventful flight and we were in Anchorage. I told Riley to walk straight through the door of the plane, because man who gets off plane sideways is going to Bangkok (we were going to Alaska). We grabbed a cab to the hotel, which was ok, the rooms were a little tight and rather plain, but then we were only here for less than 12 hours. We went out to walk around town and found Elderberry Park, which offered a nice view of the mountains, and it appeared to be low tide.

Overall Anchorage was just your average town, maybe a little below average except that it had awesome mountains in the distance. It did not take long before I picked up the scent of barley and hops, just a block away was the Sleeping Lady brewery, so we stopped in and had diner. Just your average pub food, with fair service. Of course I had to have a sampler of their beers, and like a lot of breweries I really only enjoyed two to three of them, but still enjoyed coloring in the placemats.

There was an air force base close and the skies offered the occasional fighter jets flying in formation. As we headed back to the hotel I happened to again pick up the scent of a brewery and we stopped in to the Glacier Brewery for a sampler as well. Once we got back we soon came to realize that it never really gets dark here, only dim, and we had special blinds in the hotel to block out the light, so we could finally fall asleep.
